The stunning reflecting pool lay at the heart of the existing plaza's composition - a tranquil, minimalist water feature reflecting the proximate high-rise skyline during the summer.
Unfortunately, during the winter, the pool detracted from the plaza experience, perceived as an empty vessel in disrepair and leaking into the parking garage immediately beneath.
The reflecting pool was a significant part of the plaza work and was wholly retrofitted to re-waterproof the sub-grade garage structure. The pool basin depth was reduced to decrease the amount of water required for annual operation significantly, and the basin was reimagined with a new custom black granite "surface."
Today, a discreet, radiating geometry centered on the original church building is revealed when the pool is emptied. With its custom diamond-shaped tiles, the new reflecting pool surface simulates the effect of light-play on rippling water to provide year-round activation.
